Goodbye, June!

Holy shit. Why is this year so agonizingly long?! Like 2020 was long, sure, but 2021 seems to be never ending. You mean to tell me that June only started 30 days ago? Nah, fam, nope.

2021 Resolutions:

     (1) Write [almost] every day
     (2) Don't stop reading
     (3) Complete something (e.g. a manuscript)
     (4) Share love of books/writing
     (5) Be kinder to myself

(1) ... Going to (try to) start writing again in July (in theory).

(2) Books read this month: 7. I slowed down a bit (with needing a break and a weekend trip and my sister visiting and watching new shows/movies_

(3) Still waiting....  Going to (try to) start writing again (and researching more ways to submit my work to agents) in July (in theory).

(4) Posts this month (including this one): 28.

(5) ... here's to trying (at least a little bit) in July.

Anyone still holding onto their resolutions?

Any exciting July reads?
Anything I should check out?

Rookie Mistake (a Sugar Land Saints series)

An update on Baylin Crow's Sugar Land Saints series with "Rookie Mistake":

["The straight rich jock would never date his family's gay hired help, right?

Colton:

Crushing on the town's star football player is a bad idea for a few reasons. One, Logan's straight. And has a girlfriend. That alone makes anything between us impossible.

Two, living in the guesthouse with my family on his parents' estate, I'm really just the unnoticed lawn guy. Our social status difference is night and day.

Those reasons are now irrelevant, because I'm determined to get over this pointless infatuation I've harbored for Logan Kelley for years. He's more of a jerk than I realized.

Logan:

There are three things people know about me. I'm a Saints tight end. My bank account stays fat with cash. I have a girlfriend, Jules.

What they don't know is that I'm gay, and Jules is actually my childhood best friend who's been doing me a solid in a mutually beneficial arrangement.

Colton Lockhart has been the one person I've wanted, but he doesn't know that. When I come home for a week during the summer, I'm ready to tell him and have it all planned out. Except I immediately blow my shot with him.

It's safe to say that although years of playing on the field have made me a seasoned athlete, in relationships… Well, I have zero experience in dating. Or anything else for that matter.

I hope he'll chalk it up to a rookie mistake and give me another chance."]

A very easy and relaxing read. Low angst (just the right amount to set the mood and add some drama but nothing too wild and crazy). SUPER cute (they've both been crushing on each other since high school, but couldn't/wouldn't do anything about it--until now, that is). I'd definitely recommend reading this (well, the entire series, to be honest).

A Castle In The Clouds

Kerstin Gier's "A Castle In The Clouds" reminded me a lot of #TheGrandBudapestHotel, but less (a little bit) espionage (...) and international travel (well, amongst the main characters) and murder (I really thought this novel was a murder mystery...I was wrong).

["A Castle in the Clouds follows a girl as she navigates secrets, romance, and danger in an aging grand hotel.

Way up in the Swiss mountains, there's an old grand hotel steeped in tradition and faded splendor. Once a year, when the famous New Year's Eve Ball takes place and guests from all over the world arrive, excitement returns to the vast hallways.

Sophie, who works at the hotel as an intern, is busy making sure that everything goes according to plan. But unexpected problems keep arising, and some of the guests are not who they pretend to be. Very soon, Sophie finds herself right in the middle of a perilous adventure--and at risk of losing not only her job, but also her heart."]

I loved the love triangle (though I'm normally on the fence about those--I say that, but do I really mean it?), and the assortment of characters, all with unique backgrounds and descriptions and personalities, and a bunch of perfectly accurate child-aged characters (some cute ones, some ass-holes--like I said, perfectly accurate), and an fun variety of helpful animals, and a hint at (more than a hint, if you ask me) of historical/magical/ghostly aspects.

A bit of a ramble (me, not the book), but either way, I'd say go read it. :) I'd even read a sequel, if Kerstin ever wrote one.

The Box In The Woods (Truly Devious #4)

FINALY!!! I've been waiting for this book to come out for months! MONTHS!! As soon as I finished the original Truly Devious trilogy, I saw that Maureen Johnson was writing a fourth book to the series (not immediately connected to the original murder mystery nor Stevie's fancy, smart-people boarding school--that again, reminds me of Chatham): "The Box In The Woods". And it finally came in the mail! Of course, I immediately opened it and began reading it (well, after a nap--it had been a long-ass day).

["After solving the case of Truly Devious, Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery from New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson.

Amateur sleuth Stevie Bell needs a good murder. After catching a killer at her high school, she’s back at home for a normal (that means boring) summer.

But then she gets a message from the owner of Sunny Pines, formerly known as Camp Wonder Falls—the site of the notorious unsolved case, the Box in the Woods Murders. Back in 1978, four camp counselors were killed in the woods outside of the town of Barlow Corners, their bodies left in a gruesome display. The new owner offers Stevie an invitation: Come to the camp and help him work on a true crime podcast about the case.

Stevie agrees, as long as she can bring along her friends from Ellingham Academy. Nothing sounds better than a summer spent together, investigating old murders.

But something evil still lurks in Barlow Corners. When Stevie opens the lid on this long-dormant case, she gets much more than she bargained for. The Box in the Woods will make room for more victims. This time, Stevie may not make it out alive."]

Seventy pages in, when I realized the original Camp Wonder Falls murder wasn't just some simple ol' thing, when I got to /that/ plot twist/reveal, I might have started manically laughing (again, it was a long-ass day).

Also, the fucking plot twist, like I should THANK my mother and profusely apologize. Turns out, she's always right.

As for Nate, I've never identified with a character so much (over-exaggeration, sure), but the way he talks about writing, and not being able to write, and it being there but not /there/, is so fucking on. point., its scary (takes to the author who created him, of course, getting the struggle #writingproblems).

Crooked Kingdom (Crows #2)

Annnnnd, I've decided to re-read Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse series instead of starting one of my many, many (many) TBR piles. So here we are. Re-reading "Crooked Kingdom"... which, unlike the first book in the duology, I only read once (like 2 plus years ago).

["Welcome to the world of the Grisha.

Kaz Brekker and his crew of deadly outcasts have just pulled off a heist so daring even they didn't think they'd survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they're right back to fighting for their lives.

Double-crossed and badly weakened, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope. As powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz's cunning and test the team's fragile loyalties.

A war will be waged on the city's dark and twisting streets - a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world."]

More romance, more betrayal, more secrets, more discovering the intricacies of oneself. More weird Grisha power. More injuries. More waffles.

#nomournersnofunerals #begaydocrime #wafflesforever

In some ways, this novel is the perfect pairing and completion of the Crows duology. In other ways (ways you /know/ if you read it before--ways I can't and won't spoil here for those of you who haven't), this novel just really, really sucks (the more injuries part...sort of).

Unlike the first novel, where we get to travel the world and see all kinds of places and meet all kinds of (good and bad--kind and corrupted) people, in this novel, we see all of that in Ketterdam (the good and the corrupted). Also, like, down with Pekka Rollins (he's scum of the earth and deserves pretty much everything that happened to him--as does Jan Van Eck).

Also, like all of the ships (relationships, that is)! This is one of the few books (the others I can't think of right now, but the unicorns do exist) that every ship you can think of (with the main characters) eventually happens.

Pride 2021: All Of The Love

Pride 2021: All Of The Love

This was all of my queer+ books /after/ I organized them into a pretty (but so much fucking work) rainbow. This month is for being bright and bold and SEEN. Don't let the heteronormative white supremacist capitalist patriarchy (and all of their bullshit) get you down. Be you.

And this was all of my queer+ books /before/ I organized them into different pride flag posts (and /before/ the pretty (but so much fucking work) rainbow bookshelf picture). Because not everything is always beautiful and put-together or as simple as it appears. Organizing these posts (small in comparison) and figuring out who you are and what/how you love can be messy and chaotic and complicated, you just might not see it from where you're looking.

French Tryst (Lake View Resort Holiday Series #3)

Another perfectly cute and sweet (and not so sweet) Isla Olsen short story: "French Tryst" (once again, only available on her Prolific Works page).

["When my cousin Dante invites me to come stay for a weekend at the Aspen ski resort he now calls home, the offer is too tempting to refuse. And seeing as how I've dug myself into a hole by telling my over-inquisitive family I have a girlfriend, I'm dragging my best friend, Alicia, along for the trip as well.

The last person I expect to see when I arrive at Lakeview Resort is Pierre De Luc, the ski instructor I lost my gayginity to a while back, and the only person besides Alicia who knows my secret.

Ad if you thought it might be difficult to keep up the ruse of pretending to date your female best friend while a sexy-as-hell Frenchman blatantly flirts with you and make it abundantly clear he'd be up for a repeat or seven...well, you'd be right."]

A little too short, if you ask me. But Isla does say (in an author's note) that she'd consider expanding this short story into a novella/novel one day (with a much more satisfying ending--right now it's Happy For Now instead of Happily Ever After).

Six of Crows (Crows #1)

Annnnnd, I've decided to re-read Leigh Bardugo's Grishaverse series instead of starting one of my many, many (many) TBR piles. So here we are. Re-reading "Six of Crows"... for the third time. ;)

["Ketterdam: a bustling hub of international trade where anything can be had for the right price—and no one knows that better than criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker. Kaz is offered a chance at a deadly heist that could make him rich beyond his wildest dreams. But he can’t pull it off alone. . . .

A convict with a thirst for revenge

A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager

A runaway with a privileged past

A spy known as the Wraith

A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums

A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes

Kaz’s crew is the only thing that might stand between the world and destruction—if they don’t kill each other first."]

A queer, ya heist story (think Ocean's Eleven but with a steam-punk vibe and lots of money and angst and secrets and betrayal and being okay with who you are, just the way you are).

#nomournersnofunerals #begaydocrime #wafflesforever

I just have so many feelings about this novel (one of my top five) and soooo many tumblr posts and memes and fan art. Far too many to share with you at this time. So do yourselves a favor and just read it, jump head-first into  Ketterdam (into the Crows universe) and then explore all of the inside jokes and heartbreak and newfound freedom.

The Lives of Saints

Leigh Bardugo's "The Lives of Saints". A spin-off (ish) of her Grishaverse series. The book that the Apparat gave to Alina. The book that details each and every saint, as well as their individual stories. With pretty, detailed pictures.

["Dive into the epic world of international bestselling author Leigh Bardugo with this beautifully illustrated replica of The Lives of Saints, the Istorii Sankt’ya, featuring tales of saints drawn from the beloved novels and beyond. Out of the pages of the Shadow and Bone trilogy, from the hands of Alina Starkov to yours, the Istorii Sankt’ya is a magical keepsake from the Grishaverse.

These tales include miracles and martyrdoms from familiar saints like Sankta Lizabeta of the Roses and Sankt Ilya in Chains, to the strange and obscure stories of Sankta Ursula, Sankta Maradi, and the Starless Saint.

This beautiful collection includes stunning full-color illustrations of each story."]

It was a fun, easy read that was just fairy tale after fairy tale. It was fucking gorgeous. I loved every second of it.

Shadow and Bone: Collectors Edition

Okay, we all know I'm a sucker for books and have zero impulse control when it comes to buying new ones. or old ones. or new old ones. or old new ones. Just all of the books.

But I'm also fucking weak for special and/or collector's edition. Hence my brand new "Shadow and Bone: Collectors Edition".
