Goodbye April

Ahhhh, April. You were...mostly great. You brought so much sunshine and warmth. You brought so many books. You brought practically zero writing (actually zero, none, zip, nada, non, nine).

Here I am again checking in with my 2019 resolutions:
(1) Keep learning
(2) Write [almost] every day
(3) Don't stop reading
(4) Complete something (e.g. a manuscript)
(5) Get [a little] professional

I did...almost really good this month, reading wise at least.

(1) Again, no real "evidence" of this to share.

(2) Annnnnnd, I've practically failed on this one, again. Go me.

(3) I read a crap-ton of books in April. A crap-ton. I read about 16 books in total.

(4) And again, practicaly zero writing was done this month.  My manuscript has ~113 pages done (and counting). If you're following along, I've written 0 pages since April started.

(5) Posts in April: 27 (that includes this one).

I'm going to (try) to do this at the end of every month, or close to it (that is, if I remember, and my life isn't too too crazy at that time).

What are your big May reads?
Anything I should check out?

As we say at the daycare I work at during circle time:
"Goodbye, April!"
"Hello, May!"
It sounds silly, but just imagine 6-10 two year olds repeating that after you. It could make almost anyone smile.

How (Not) To Ask A Boy To Prom

AHHHH, okay, so I like literally just finished this book, and oh god, I loved it. Loved it. Read this. Please.

S.J. Goslee wrote "Whatever: Or How Junior Year Became Totally F*cked" (which I read and loved a few months ago). "How (Not) To Ask A Boy To Prom" came out this week. I read it in like a day.

My other favorite trope: fake dating.

Fake dating. And a disastrous gay. Do you really need to know more?

["Nolan Grant is sixteen, gay, and (definitely) still a virgin. He's never had a boyfriend, or even been kissed. It's not like Penn Valley is brimming with prospects. And when his big sister stages an elaborate “prom-posal” so Nolan can ask out his not-so-secret crush, Nolan freezes. He's saved from further embarrassment by bad boy Bern, who, for his own reasons, offers to fake-date Nolan.

Nolan thinks it's the perfect way to get Daphne off his back and spend the rest of the year drawing narwhals, tending to plants, and avoiding whatever died under his bed a few weeks ago. What he doesn't think about is Bern's ex-girlfriend, who seriously wants to kill him."]

Starry Eyes

Remember when I said that I would fan-girl all about "Starry Eyes" by Jenn Bennett the other day? Well, here ya go, friends...

Best friends turn...sudden enemies after an innocent kiss. Shooting stars. Camping. Camping with idiots. All the above and more. (More includes bears and condoms (not in the same scene)).

["Ever since last year’s homecoming dance, best friends-turned-best enemies Zorie and Lennon have made an art of avoiding each other. It doesn’t hurt that their families are the modern-day Californian version of the Montagues and Capulets.

But when a group camping trip goes south, Zorie and Lennon find themselves stranded in the wilderness. Alone. Together.

What could go wrong?

With no one but each other for company, Zorie and Lennon have no choice but to hash out their issues via witty jabs and insults as they try to make their way to safety. But fighting each other while also fighting off the forces of nature makes getting out of the woods in one piece less and less likely.

And as the two travel deeper into Northern California’s rugged backcountry, secrets and hidden feelings surface. But can Zorie and Lennon’s rekindled connection survive out in the real world? Or was it just a result of the fresh forest air and the magic of the twinkling stars?"]
Warning: this book has nothing, NOTHING, to do with the horror film I accidentally stumbled upon with the same title. Just saying.

Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe

"Aristotle And Dante Discover The Secrets of The Universe" by Benjamin Alire Sáenz was one of the very first, if not the first, boys-who-love-boys book that I've ever read.

["Aristotle is an angry teen with a brother in prison. Dante is a know-it-all who has an unusual way of looking at the world. When the two meet at the swimming pool, they seem to have nothing in common. But as the loners start spending time together, they discover that they share a special friendship—the kind that changes lives and lasts a lifetime. And it is through this friendship that Ari and Dante will learn the most important truths about themselves and the kind of people they want to be."]

But fair warning, this is also about two boys discovering (well one discovering, one already knows) about their own sexuality in Texas in the 60s (or was it 80s?). Either way, trigger warning for any age/era-related, homophobia/homophobic language.

Secret of A Heart Note

Did I ever mention the independent study that I created back in grad school while I was finishing my thesis? It was focused on a narrow (but expending) genre: ya romance + magical realism.

Stacey Lee's "Secret of A Heart Note" was at the top of my To Read list and therefore, at the top of my self-made syllabus.

["An evocative novel about a teen aroma expert who uses her extrasensitive sense of smell to mix perfumes that help others fall in love while protecting her own heart at all costs

Sometimes love is right under your nose. As one of only two aromateurs left on the planet, sixteen-year-old Mimosa knows what her future holds: a lifetime of weeding, mixing love elixirs, and matchmaking—all while remaining incurably alone. For Mim, the rules are clear: falling in love would render her nose useless, taking away her one great talent. Still, Mimosa doesn’t want to spend her life elbow-deep in soil and begonias. She dreams of a normal high school experience with friends, sports practices, debate club, and even a boyfriend. But when she accidentally gives an elixir to the wrong woman and has to rely on the lovesick woman’s son, the school soccer star, to help fix the situation, Mim quickly begins to realize that falling in love isn’t always a choice you can make."]

This was SOOOOO SOO SO good. Read it. Please. Read it. Fall in love, like Mim.

Been Here All Along

This book (and the next four) are books that I've read (and that have been published) much more recently.

"Been Here All Along" by Sandy Hall was bought during my I-need-boys-who-love-boys-books-like-NOW period (which, frankly, happens every six months or so (so if you have any recommends, please hit me up)).

This novel follows the typical, I'm-In-Love-With-My-Best-Friend-But-They-Don't-Know-It Troupe (one of my favs). Gideon is in love with his best friend. The problems: Gideon isn't fully out, Kyle isn't gay, not to mention Kyle is dating someone else.

["Gideon always has a plan. His plans include running for class president, becoming head of the yearbook committee and having his choice of colleges. They do not include falling head over heels for his best friend and next-door neighbour, Kyle. It's a distraction. It's pointless, as Kyle is already dating the gorgeous and popular head cheerleader, Ruby. And Gideon doesn't know what to do . . .

Kyle finally feels like he has a handle on life. He has a wonderful girlfriend, a best friend willing to debate the finer points of Lord of the Rings, and social acceptance as captain of the basketball team. Then, both Ruby and Gideon start acting really weird, just as his spot on the team is threatened, and Kyle can't quite figure out what he did wrong . . .
 "]

Fall in love with this sweet, confused boys.

Aurelia

"Aurelia" by Anne Osterlund inspired me to write my fist book (well, the first non-fanfiction based one) way back in middle school.

What I remember about this book, even now, almost 13 years later:
-far off places (great, detailed settings)
-daring sword fights (fencing, to the death?)
-a prince in disguise (seriously)
-a kick-ass princess
-a compelling love confession faced with an impossible decision
-how much I loved, loved, loved this books

["An impressive debut, equal parts commercial appeal and literary prowess.

Princess Aurelia is next in line to rule the kingdom of Tyralt, but she would rather be one of the common folk, free to learn and roam and . . . not marry the next tyrannical prince that comes courting. Naturally, the king wants Aurelia to marry for political power. Aurelia wants to marry for love. And someone in the kingdom wants her . . . dead. Assigned to investigate and protect Aurelia is Robert, the son of the king's former royal spy and one of Aurelia's oldest friends. As Aurelia and Robert slowly uncover clues as to who is threatening her, their friendship turns to romance. With everything possible on the line, her life, her kingdom, her heart, Aurelia is forced to take matters into her own hands, no matter the cost."]

The Smile

This one I read even longer ago...that wasn't great grammar, but go with it.

A friend bought this book for me in middle school. I kept it all these years because it was just that great.

Donna Jo Napoli's novel "The Smile" gives us a creative retelling of just one theory of who is behind the famous Mona Lisa smile.  This books takes you to Florence, transports you to that old world love, that romantic period where anything seems possible.

["Hers is the most famous portrait in the world. Here, in prose as rich as the high Renaissance, is Mona Lisa's tale: a story of passion, intrigue, loss, and, most of all, love.

Elisabetta longs for romance, though she thinks she is too plain. Then, on a fateful visit to glittering Florence, she catches the eye of the great Leonardo da Vinci, and falls for a boy named Giuliano de' Medici. It is a dangerous time to be involved with a Medici. As tragedy and chaos threaten their happiness, Elisabetta faces the bittersweet truth of love.

The Other Countess

I bought Eve Edward's "The Other Countess" when I was visiting London/Paris about ten years ago. It had that old European feel: the politics, the social hierarchy, the gowns.

Since I haven't read this book in a decade, I'll just copy/paste the summary here (since I've been doing that in the past couple of posts anyway *shrug*).

["ELLIE - Lady Eleanor Rodriguez of San Jaime - is in possession of a gold-seeking father, a worthless title and a feisty spirit that captivates the elite of the Queen's court, and none other than the handsome new Earl of Dorset . . .

WILLIAM LACEY has inherited his father's title and his financial ruin. Now the Earl must seek a wealthy heiress and restore his family's fortune.

But Will's head has been turned by the gorgeous Ellie, yet their union can never be. Will is destined to marry a worthy Lady so the only question is - which one . . . ?

Midwinterblood

This book was weird. Really weird. But so, so, so, so good. So good.

You know those Buzzfeed articles and Tumblr posts that are all about the "Details I Bet You Didn't Notice In XYZ"? The things that make you tingle with excitement, the things that make you hate how clever authors can be. That is this book.

Marcus Sedgwick's novel "Midwinterblood" is...amazing and confusing and full of fantasy and gothic feels and Norse theories. It's the kind of books you have to take notes for when you start seeing the recurring imagery/themes so you can fully appreciate it's creative construction. It's...hard to explain. Read it anyway, for me.

["Have you ever had the feeling that you've lived another life? Been somewhere that has felt totally familiar, even though you've never been there before, or felt that you know someone well, even though you are meeting them for the first time? It happens.

In a novel comprising seven parts, each influenced by a moon - the flower moon, the harvest moon, the hunter's moon, the blood moon - this is the story of Eric and Merle whose souls have been searching for each other since their untimely parting."]

Eric and Merle's souls find each other in each new generation, each new series of characters and stories and sacrificing. There's love and revenge and vampires and kings and a constantly reoccurring magical flower.

All The Bright Places

I read Jennifer Niven's novel "All The Bright Places" while, again, trying to understand a character was writing. I know what depression feels like, but I wasn't sure how to write it out, how to portray it on the page. This novel helped. This novel made me cry.

["Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink."]

Trigger Warning: suicide, suicidal tendencies, death, despression

Anne and Henry

I bought "Anne and Henry" by Dawn Ius from a book sale at my local library. Again, this one took me a while to read also (that only happens because I have a long list of TBR stuff and sometimes, I have priority-reads).

"Anne and Henry" is a..."fanfiction"...a modern retelling of the infamous love story between Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII. I don't know much about European history (thanks to our wonderful public education system in the states), but I loved, loved this book. It made me want to know more about what was real, what was creative license.

["Henry Tudor’s life has been mapped out since the day he was born: student body president, valedictorian, Harvard Law School, and a stunning political career just like his father’s. But ever since the death of his brother, the pressure for Henry to be perfect has doubled. And now he’s trapped: forbidden from pursuing a life as an artist or dating any girl who isn’t Tudor-approved.

Then Anne Boleyn crashes into his life.

Wild, brash, and outspoken, Anne is everything Henry isn’t allowed to be—or want. But soon Anne is all he can think about. His mother, his friends, and even his girlfriend warn him away, but his desire for Anne consumes him.

Henry is willing to do anything to be with her, but once they’re together, will their romance destroy them both?"]

I Am Not A Serial Killer

A peer of mine suggested that I read Dan Wells's "I Am Not A Serial Killer" while I was struggling to reach my own creative understanding of a character I was working on (yes, he was a serial killer).

It took me a while to finally read this book, but when I did, I loved it. It fed into my fascination with criminology (a minor of my when I was in undergrad) and serial killers (if you don't know anything about them, don't worry, Wells does a great job at info dumping without info dumping, you got this).

"I Am Not A Serial Killer" follows John Wayne Cleaver, a diagnosed sociopath as he struggles with empathy and...well...not being a serial killer (or killer of any sort). He feels as if he is "fated" to become a serial killer, because of his name, his diagnoses, and the fact that they live above a mortuary. So he lives by a set of self-appointed rules, to keep himself in check.

This is all threatened when he notices suspicious behavior in their small, quite town: a serious of murders. Can he solve the crime himself before he succumbs to his own dark desires?

Fair warning: there are some seriously surprising supernatural aspects in this novel that I did NOT see coming.

Trigger warnings: death, killing, creeping supernatural beings, mortuary stuff (blood, needles, dead bodies, etc).

Save The Date

Morgan Matson's: cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but a wedding (and some Murphy's Law)!

"Save The Date":

["Charlie Grant's older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can't wait for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster. There's the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won't stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren't speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo. Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner's nephew is unexpectedly, distractedly cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she'll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future."]

Unexpected Everything

Morgan Matson's: cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but dogs, lots and lots of dogs (the animal kind and the politics kind)!

"Unexpected Everything":

Andie is a planner. She has everything sorted, planned, organized. Her summer will be awesome and totally resume-worthy. Except...it isn't.

When Andie's political father's career is put on hold, and her summer internship is cancelled, and she has no other options, Andie takes a job as a dog-walker...yes, a dog-walker. And without those dogs, without that unexpected (ha) job, she wouldn't have been Carter, she wouldn't have gotten close to her father (sorry, spoiler there), she wouldn't have discovered herself (and lots and lots of unexpected (ha) fun).

Since You've Been Gone

Morgan Matson's: cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but with asurprise To-Do, To-Dare list?

"Since You've Been Gone":

["It was Sloane who yanked Emily out of her shell and made life 100% interesting. But right before what should have been the most epic summer, Sloane just…disappears. All she leaves behind is a to-do list.

On it, thirteen Sloane-inspired tasks that Emily would normally never try. But what if they could bring her best friend back?

Apple picking at night? Okay, easy enough.

Dance until dawn? Sure. Why not?

Kiss a stranger? Um...

Emily now has this unexpected summer, and the help of Frank Porter (totally unexpected) [totally cute], to check things off Sloane's list. Who knows what she’ll find?

Go skinny-dipping? Wait...what?"]

Second Chance Summer

Morgan Matson's: cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but at the lake for the summer!

"Second Chance Summer":

Taylor might not have a close-knit family, but they're going to be close-knit this summer, what with her father having only three-four months to live. And his last wish? Spend the summer up at the lake house.

Expect, Taylor left a lot of baggage behind at the lake house a few years ago that she's...not so excited to get back to: a disgruntled ex-best-friend, a possibly-heartbroken ex-crush (first crush, first kiss, first, first, first).

Take a ride with Taylor (she likes to run away) as she navigates the pit-falls of...all of this.

Amy and Roger's Epic Detour

This is now a cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but with Morgan Matson...series... Hang on tight.

I first read Morgan Matson when Uppercase Box sent me "Save the Date" (which we'll get to later) last fall. Clearly, I fell in love with her cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels because I bought the rest of them.

What I love about Morgan's books is that they're all within the same universe, within the same small town, with the same possibility of meeting each other. This helped me out with my own work, honestly. Thank you, Morgan.

"Amy and Roger's Epic Detour":

Morgan Matson's cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but with a road trip!

Amy doesn't want to do summer. No, because she doesn't want to move across the country, start a new school her senior year, or leave her childhood home (especially after her father's sudden death). But that's what her plan is...with a familiar face....a really cute familiar face.

Serious Moonlight

A cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but with a Clue-worthy mystery...

Jenn Bennett (of "Starry Eyes" (a Uppercase Box Book I got a while ago (that I still need to blog about)) gives us yet another amazing novel with "Serious Moonlight."

Birdie has been sheltered for almost her entire life by her over protecting grandmother. But now, she's graduated from high (home) school (practically), and she's scored her first real job. And now, she has something more to do with her time besides her over-active-imagination and her mystery book (and mysteries in general) obsession: a job, a mystery, and...a boy.

During the midnight shift at her hotel job, she' meets Daniel Aoki. He volunteers to be her guide in all things brave, mysterious, and adoration.

They both have secrets and obsessions and...cute little crushes on each other.

Follow them through the streets of Seattle as they solve their own mystery.

Princess And The Fangirl

A cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but with fandoms...

"Princess And The Fangirl" the highly anticipated sequel to "Geekerella" by Ashlee Poston. And let me say, it did not disappoint.

Jessica Stone: talented actress, young adult struggling with self-esteem, and Princess Amara. She wants nothing more than to quit Princess Amara, to move on to something...worth it.

Imogene Lovelace: disappointing daughter, young girl struggling with self-esteem, and a fangirl on an impossible mission, to save Princess Amara.

When they get mistaken for each other, Jessica makes a deal, to switch for the weekend (besides, she has to find the script leaker who might or might not ruin her entire career). Imogene will do Jessica's interviews, panels, and meet-and-greets. Jessica will do Imogene's fan-booth and save her career.

And well, who's going to argue if they fall in love along the way (not to each other, thought that would be cool too).

OH, there is lots of LGBT representation in here too, gotta love it!

Music of What Happens

A cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels...but gay...

Bill Konigsberg brought us (me) "Openly Straight" and "Honestly Ben" and made me cry. Now he brought us (me) "Music of What Happens."

["And here I could give you a great description of the novel, but honestly (ha), openly (ha), I really liked the one on the back of the book (don't sue me for plagiarism, Bill).

Max: Chill. Sports. Video games. Gay and not a big deal, not to him, not to his mom, not to his buddies. And a secret: An encounter with an older kid that makes it hard to breathe, one that he doesn't want to think about, ever.

Jordan: The opposite of chill. Poetry. His "wives" and the Chandler Mall. Never been kissed and searching for Mr. Right, who probably won't like him anyway. And a secret: A spiraling out of control mother, and the knowledge that he's the only one who can keep the family from falling apart.

Throw in a rickety, 1980s-era food truck called Coq Au Vinny. Add in prickly pears, cloud eggs, and a murky idea of what's considered locally sourced and organic. Place it all in Mesa, Arizona, in June, where the temp regularly hits 114. And top it off with a touch of undeniable chemistry between utter opposites.

Over the course of one summer, two boys will have to face their biggest fears and decide what they're willing to risk -- to get the thing they want the most."]

Trigger warning: rape, depression, rape, suicide attempt, rape (yes, I said that already, and yes, not to spoil, but seriously, its in detail (and talked about so openly and honestly and what is really needed for young boys) so skip those parts if you need)

Rayne and Delilah's Midnite Matinee

"Rayne and Delilah's Midnite Matinee" by Jeff Zenter...this was yet another Uppercase Box Book. Signed. Sealed. Delivered right to me.

Delia (Delilah) and Josie (Rayne) have their own late night horror-themed, bad-movie-centered talk show. If you can call it that. It's strange and weird and bad (just bad) and they love it. It's theirs. But Josie is given an opportunity (an ultimatum) about her future, her dream job. But Delia has the opportunity to confront the father who ran out on her when she was little. But they finally have a shot to make their show ("Midnite Matinee") something big, finally meeting with someone big. But, but, but...but what happens when everything and nothing all happens at once.

You gotta love a cheesy, YA-contemporary romance novels. And by you, I mean me. Cause I do, a loooooot (queue a series of posts about just that).

Undercover Princess

THIS COVER.

They tell you not to judge a book by its cover, because its shallow and well, judgmental. But take a really good look at this cover. It's freaking gorgeous. The cover was the sole reason for me buying the book (the summary hadn't catch my attention all that much).

But the book was really good. Cute, too.

Don't judge the title either. Because this princess (these princesses) are safe-myself, I-Don't-Want-To-Be-Cinderella (circa Cheetah Girls), bad-ass little girls. They don't take shit from no one. And yes, they do save themselves (quite a few times).

After watching the Netflix adaptation of Gerard Way's (yes, that Gerard Way) popular comic book series "The Umbrella Academy" and seriously, seriously falling in some serious love, I had to give the original text a shot.

Okay, and I hate myself a little for siding with the movie/series again, but I kinda (a lot) liked the Netflix adaptation better than the original comic books. :/ Don't hate me, too.
